Illustrated step-by-step guide

Connect a VCR to a TV with HDMI

A simple, illustrated VCR-to-HDMI setup using composite RCA outputs and an active, powered converter.

VIDEOLR
STEP 1

Find the VCR’s AV OUT sockets

Look for yellow VIDEO OUT and white/red AUDIO OUT. Do not use sockets labeled IN.

STEP 2

Get a composite AV-to-HDMI converter

Check the box: yellow/white/red RCA INPUT and HDMI OUTPUT. This is an active converter, not a passive cable.

POWER REQUIRED
STEP 3

Connect the converter and power it

Run VCR AV OUT to converter AV IN, converter HDMI OUT to TV HDMI IN. Plug in USB or wall power if required.

HDMI 1
STEP 4

Select the TV input and press Play

Choose the matching HDMI number on your TV. Insert a known-good tape and press PLAY.

Before you buy

An HDMI-to-AV converter works in the reverse direction and will not solve this setup. Low-cost converters may not handle every tape signal.
